Tiro Afeta is found in the eastern central part of Jimma Zone. It has an area of 1001.9 km2 and one urban center, i.e., Dimtu town (district’s capital). The district has common boundaries with Sekoru, Limu Kossa, Kersa and Omo Nada districts as well as Southern Ethiopian peoples Regional State (fig.9). Topograhically, it is characterized mainly by dissected plateaus, mountains (Geshe, Haro, Gebera and Hako Albiti) and Gilgel Gibe valley. Altitudinally, the district lies between 1640 and 2800 m.a.s.l. Gilgel Gibe, Busa, Nedi and Aleltu perennial rivers as well as Ilke, Godo, Teltele, Ebicha, Lanjibo, Igo and Kersa seasonal streams are flowing through the district. The district is classified into woinadega (85%) and dega (15%) agro climatic zones. Chromic and Pellic Vertisols, and Orthic Acrisols are the major soil types found in Tiro Afeta. High forest, woodland, riverine, bush and shrub, and man made forests are available in the district. Geshe forest, i.e., a part of Tiro Boter Becho State forest is found in the district. But here are no game reserves. However, pig, warthog, ape, porcupine, civet cat, fox, lion and antelope are found in the district.
